I used to be a very nervous patient, before visiting Dr Sarah Lochead at Helen’s Bay Dental Practice. The environment is very relaxed and friendly and the treatments I have received over the years have been amazing, as this Dental Practice uses all the latest, up to date dental technology and techniques. I could not be happier with the standard of care and treatment I have received. Sarah is by far the best dentist I’ve ever been to. All the staff are so welcoming and friendly and I highly recommend this practice. I no longer dread going to the dentist.

Feel Calm, Comfortable and in Control

If the thought of visiting the dentist makes you feel nervous or anxious, you’re not alone. Dental anxiety is incredibly common, and for many, it can be a significant barrier to getting the care they need.

At Helen’s Bay Dental Practice, we understand those feelings completely. That’s why we offer gentle sedation for patients who need extra reassurance. With safe, effective sedation options and a warm, supportive approach, we’ll help you feel calm, comfortable, and confident every step of the way.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation is a way to help you feel more relaxed during your dental treatment. It doesn’t put you to sleep, but it does ease anxiety, reduce sensitivity, and help time pass more quickly.

We use conscious sedation, which allows you to remain awake and able to respond, but in a deeply relaxed and peaceful state. Most patients remember very little about their treatment afterwards, and often say they feel as though it was over in moments.

Sedation can be used for a wide range of treatments, from simple fillings to more complex procedures like root canal treatments, extractions, and dental implant placement.

Is Dental Sedation Right for You?

Sedation may be ideal if:

  • You have dental anxiety or phobia
  • You have a strong gag reflex
  • You need complex or lengthy treatment
  • You feel nervous about needles or dental tools
  • You’ve had a past dental experience that left you feeling uneasy

Even if you’re not sure whether sedation is right for you, we’re happy to talk it through and tailor your care to suit your needs.

Types of Sedation

We offer a range of safe, effective conscious sedation options, all designed to help you relax while staying awake and in control.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed tablet before your appointment to help reduce anxiety and make you feel more at ease. While you’ll remain conscious and able to respond, you may feel drowsy or relaxed.

You’ll probably remember little of the procedure afterwards and you’ll need someone to accompany you home and stay with you until the effects wear off.

IV Sedation

IV sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation and is ideal if you have higher levels of anxiety or you’re having a longer, more complex procedure. The sedative is delivered directly into a vein in your hand or arm, creating a deeply calm, dream-like state.  You’ll be awake but completely at ease, and most patients remember very little afterwards. As with oral sedation, you’ll need someone to take you home and help you rest and recover.

The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Complete Peace of Mind

Sedation helps you feel calm from the moment treatment begins. The sense of fear or anxiety that once held you back is replaced with confidence, allowing you to focus on your wellbeing, not your worries.

Treatment That Feels Effortless

Most patients describe sedation as feeling like they’re in a dream-like state. You’ll be aware of what’s happening, but you won’t feel anxious, uncomfortable, or overwhelmed. It’s quite common to remember very little afterwards.

Comfortable, Pain-Free Care

Sedation enhances your comfort during treatment by reducing sensitivity and easing tension. If you struggle with numbing injections or have a strong gag reflex, sedation can make treatment much easier.

Fewer Appointments Needed

Often, dental anxiety means taking things slower. Because you’ll be more relaxed and still when sedated, we can often do more for you in a single visit. This makes it ideal if you lead a busy life or need multiple procedures.

Restore Your Confidence in Dentistry

If dental anxiety has kept you away from the dentist in the past, sedation can help rebuild your confidence. Many patients find that after just one experience with sedation, they feel more comfortable returning for future care, even without it.

Safe, Modern, and Highly Monitored

At Helen’s Bay Dental Practice, your well-being is our priority. We follow strict safety protocols and monitor you closely throughout your treatment, ensuring your sedation experience is safe, smooth, and reassuring.

Your Sedation Journey

If you’re receiving sedation to make your procedure with us completely anxiety-free, we recommend that you don’t drive to your appointment and bring someone with you. How quickly the sedatives wear off will depend on which type of sedation we use.

Helens Bay Dental Practice Sedation

Step One: Consultation and Assessment

We’ll take the time to get to know you, understand your concerns, and assess your general health. If sedation is a good fit, we’ll explain exactly how it works and answer any questions you may have.

On the day of your treatment, we’ll walk you through what to expect. You’ll need to arrange transport and bring someone with you, as you won’t be able to drive or return to work afterwards.
