What Is Root Canal Treatment?
Inside each of your teeth lies a small chamber of soft tissue called the pulp. This living tissue contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue.
When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, usually due to deep decay, injury, or a cracked tooth, it can cause intense pain and sensitivity.
Root canal treatment is a procedure that removes the damaged pulp, disinfects the space, and seals the tooth to prevent further infection and decay. The tooth is then restored with a filling or a crown, so it looks and feels like it did before.
You may need a root canal if you have:
- Persistent toothache or throbbing pain
- Pain when biting or chewing
- Sensitivity to hot or cold food and beverages
- Swelling in the gums around the tooth
- A darkened tooth or visible hole
- An abscess
- Bad breath
- A constant bad taste in your mouth
Even if symptoms seem to fade, the infection may still be there. That’s why early intervention is so important. The earlier we treat you, the more likely it is that we can save your tooth and prevent the need for extraction.
