What Is Gum Disease?

There are two main stages:
Gingivitis
This is the earliest stage. You may notice redness, swelling, or bleeding when you brush. Gingivitis is reversible with a good hygiene routine and professional care.
Periodontitis
If gingivitis isn’t treated, it can progress into periodontitis. This affects the deeper tissues and bone supporting your teeth. Over time, it can lead to gum recession and teeth may become loose and fall out.
There are several symptoms to look for:
- Bleeding when brushing or flossing
- Red, swollen, or tender gums
- Receding gums (teeth look longer)
- Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
- Loose or shifting teeth
- Sensitivity or discomfort when chewing
Not all gum disease causes pain. So even if your mouth feels fine, it’s still worth having regular checkups to catch early warning signs.
