Periodontal Treatments

A
A. McDowell
I went to the hygienist today for a routine clean and had such a great experience. Gill was amazing – she instantly put me at ease with her knowledge and experience, and took the time to address my concerns about my gums. I also received a lovely warm welcome from Shelley, the nurse, who provided excellent support throughout my treatment. Both made the whole visit really comfortable and reassuring. Highly recommend!

Protect the Foundation of Your Smile

When you think about your smile, your teeth likely take centre stage — but it’s your gums that support everything. Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. But when gum health is neglected, it can quietly become a serious problem.

Gum disease is incredibly common — and it’s often painless in the early stages. Left untreated, it can lead to sore gums, bad breath, wobbly teeth, and even tooth loss. It’s also linked to wider health concerns, including diabetes, heart disease, and pregnancy complications.

The good news? With the right care, gum disease is treatable, and in many cases, reversible. Our gentle periodontal treatments help stop gum disease in its tracks, support healing, and keep your mouth feeling fresh, comfortable and healthy.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) is caused by plaque — the sticky film of bacteria that builds up on your teeth and gums every day.

There are two main stages:

Gingivitis

This is the earliest stage. You may notice redness, swelling, or bleeding when you brush. Gingivitis is reversible with a good hygiene routine and professional care.

Periodontitis

If gingivitis isn’t treated, it can progress into periodontitis. This affects the deeper tissues and bone supporting your teeth. Over time, it can lead to gum recession and teeth may become loose and fall out.

There are several symptoms to look for:

  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Receding gums (teeth look longer)
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Sensitivity or discomfort when chewing

Not all gum disease causes pain. So even if your mouth feels fine, it’s still worth having regular checkups to catch early warning signs.

What Are Periodontal Treatments?

Every periodontal treatment begins with a thorough assessment. We’ll gently examine your gums, check for signs of inflammation, measure pocket depths, and take digital scans or X-rays to understand the health of the bone around your teeth.

Once we know where you are on your gum health journey, we’ll create a personalised treatment plan. Your care may include some or all of the following:

Deep Cleaning

If bacteria have built up beneath the gumline, we’ll perform a deep clean to remove plaque and tartar from the roots of your teeth. This is often called root surface debridement or periodontal scaling. We use gentle ultrasonic tools and, if needed, local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout. By removing the bacteria causing the infection, we allow the gums to heal and reattach to the teeth.

Ongoing Gum Care

Once gum disease is under control, we’ll recommend regular maintenance appointments to prevent relapse. This might include more frequent hygiene visits, tailored oral care advice, and close monitoring of your gum health over time.

Advanced Periodontal Care

In more severe cases, you may need advanced treatments, like surgery to clean deeper pockets, or bone or gum grafting to restore lost support. Whatever periodontal care you need, we’ll guide you every step of the way in a supportive manner and perform your treatment to the highest clinical standards.

The Benefits of Periodontal Care at Helen’s Bay Dental Practice

Protect Your Natural Smile

Healthy gums are essential to holding your teeth in place and periodontal disease can creep in slowly, without you even noticing. Treating gum disease early helps prevent tooth loss and supports long-term oral health.

Freshen Your Breath

Bacteria under the gums can often cause bad breath, leaving you feeling self-conscious. Professional cleaning removes this buildup, giving you a fresher, cleaner smile so you can feel comfortable in social situations again.

Improve Your Comfort

There’s nothing worse than sensitivity or discomfort from oral health problems, and how they affect your life. Treating gum disease reduces swelling, bleeding, and tenderness, so you can eat, brush, and smile without discomfort.

Boost Your Overall Health

Your gums may be the foundation of your smile, but they’re part of an even bigger picture. Treating gum infections can support your immune system and reduce your risk of systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Feel Confident Again

Poor gum health can leave you feeling self-conscious in so many ways. With healthy gums, your teeth feel firmer, your breath smells fresher, and your smile looks better. Periodontal care brings back the confidence that gum disease can quietly take away.

Experience Precision Care

All our advanced gum care treatments are performed to the highest standards by our experienced periodontist, Lidia Ferritto. We use the latest technology and techniques to ensure your comfort throughout.
